RESUMO

Unavailability of probiotics in fish digestive system fingerlings is unable to digest and absorb their food properly. The current research was conducted to investigate the influence of probiotics added Linseed meal based (LMB) diet on hematology and carcass composition of Labeo rohita juveniles. Hematological parameters are essential diagnostics used to estimate the health status of fish. The usage of probiotics for fish health improvement is becoming common due to the higher demand for environment-friendly culture system in water. Linseed meal was used as a test ingredient to prepare six experimental test diets by adding probiotics (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g/kg) and 1% indigestible chromic oxide for seventy days. According to their live wet weight, five percent feed was given to fingerlings twice a day. Fish blood and carcass samples (Whole body) were taken for hematological and carcass analysis at the end of the experiment. The highest carcass composition (crude protein; 18.72%, crude fat; 8.80% and gross energy; 2.31 kcal/g) was observed in fish fed with test diet II supplemented with probiotics (2 g/kg). Moreover, maximum RBCs number (2.62× 106mm-3), WBCs (7.84×103mm-3), PCV (24.61), platelets (63.85) and hemoglobin (7.87) had also been reported in the fish fingerlings fed on 2 g/kg of probiotics supplemented diet. Results indicated that probiotics supplementation has a critical role in improvement of fingerlings' body composition and hematological indices. Present findings showed that probiotics supplementation at 2 g/kg level in linseed by-product-based diet was very useful for enhancing the overall performance of L. rohita fingerlings.

Novel coronavirus (nCoV) namely "SARS-CoV-2" is being found responsible for current PANDEMIC commenced from Wuhan (China) since December 2019 and has been described with epidemiological linkage to China in about 221 countries and territories until now. In this study we have characterized the genetic lineage of SARS-CoV-2 and report the recombination within the genus and subgenus of coronaviruses. Phylogenetic relationship of thirty nine coronaviruses belonging to its four genera and five subgenera was analyzed by using the Neighbor-joining method using MEGA 6.0. Phylogenetic trees of full length genome, various proteins (spike, envelope, membrane and nucleocapsid) nucleotide sequences were constructed separately. Putative recombination was probed via RDP4. Our analysis describes that the "SARS-CoV-2" although shows great similarity to Bat-SARS-CoVs sequences through whole genome (giving sequence similarity 89%), exhibits conflicting grouping with the Bat-SARS-like coronavirus sequences (MG772933 and MG772934). Furthermore, seven recombination events were observed in SARS-CoV-2 (NC_045512) by RDP4. But not a single recombination event fulfills the high level of certainty. Recombination mostly housed in spike protein genes than rest of the genome indicating breakpoint cluster arises beyond the 95% and 99% breakpoint density intervals. Genetic similarity levels observed among "SARS-CoV-2" and Bat-SARS-CoVs advocated that the latter did not exhibit the specific variant that cause outbreak in humans, proposing a suggestion that "SARS-CoV-2" has originated possibly from bats. These genomic features and their probable association with virus characteristics along with virulence in humans require further consideration.

We have evaluated the effects of different fish feeds on the body composition, growth, and enzyme activities of Labeo rohita (Rohu). In total, 240 fishes between the average weights of 24.77±2.15g were studied. The treatments were applied in a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments of 60 fishes each. Treatments consisted of four different fish feeds [Oryza (T1), AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4)]. Body composition, growth performance, and enzyme activities were evaluated. There was a significant variation in performance of fishes fed with different type of feed; as fishes having Oryza feed showed the highest weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and best feed conversion ratio (FCR) as compared to other groups that were considered to be significant (P ≤ 0.05). High net weight gain was obtained in T4 when compared with T2 and T3. FCR value of T4 was less than T1 but higher than T2, T3 and T2, which showed the lowest values. The specific growth rate was recorded as average in T4, but T2 led a high SGR than T3. Similarly, crude protein level and digestive enzymes activity was recorded significantly highest in fed with Oryza (T1) as compared to AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4). Water quality parameters were recorded significant in all treatments except pH and DO of treatment (T1), significantly different from other treatments. It was concluded that Rohu (Labeo rohita) could show a promising growth rate and protease enzyme activity when fed with the Oryza feed of 25% protein.

The incidence of gliomas is increasing worldwide, including India. Of the 18,820 new cases of primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors diagnosed annually in the United States, gliomas account for over 60% with 30-40% of them being glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), 10% being anaplastic astrocytoma (AA), and 10% being low grade gliomas (LGGs). This is in contrast to one study from West Bengal, India, in which only 7.9% of the brain tumors were GBMs, while 46.8% were astrocytomas. Of all adult primary CNS tumors, GBM is the most common and the most malignant with about 7,000 to 8,000 new cases annually in the United States. Given poor outcomes, a number of treatment approaches have been investigated. Common to these approaches is the use of adjuvant radiation therapy, even as surgery alone, with or without chemotherapy, may be the mainstay for some lower grade and low-risk gliomas. Today, treatment typically involves external beam radiation, with concurrent and adjuvant chemotherapy for more aggressive histologies. Although gliomas are relatively uncommon, active research is ongoing. Results of landmark trials along with some of the recently published trials are presented. These trials and management strategies as well as evolving concepts are found by reviewing over 200 articles in the National Library Medical (NLM) database, PubMed, more than 60 of which are refrenced. RESUMO

The detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in gram-negative bacteria that produce AmpC beta-lactamases is problematic. In the present study, the performance of modified double-disc synergy test (MDDST) that employs a combination of cefepime and piperacillin-tazobactam for the detection of Proteus mirabilis producing extended spectrum and AmpC beta-lactamases was evaluated and compared with double-disc synergy test (DDST) and NCCLS phenotypic disc confirmatory test (NCCLS-PDCT). A total of 90 clinical isolates of P. mirabilis , which met the CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute) screening criteria that these had broth microdilution (BMD) MIC of > or =2 mg/mL for at least one extended spectrum cephalosporin [ceftazidime (CAZ), cefotaxime (CTX) and cefpodoxime], were selected for the study. MDDST detected ESBLs in 40/90 of the isolates, whereas DDST detected ESBLs in only 25 isolates. NCCLS-PDCT could detect ESBLs in 39 isolates using CAZ and CAZ + clavulanic acid (CLA) combination, whereas CTX and CTX + CLA combination could detect only 37 isolates as ESBL positive. As many as 34/40 ESBL positive isolates were confirmed to be AmpC beta-lactamase positive by the modified three-dimensional test (MTDT). MDDST and NCCLS-PDCT could detect ESBLs in all the 34 AmpC positive isolates, whereas DDST could detect ESBLs in only 19 isolates. The study demonstrated that MDDST is superior to DDST and as sensitive as NCCLS-PDCT. However, MDDST seems to have enhanced potential for the detection of ESBLs in AmpC beta-lactamase-producing P. mirabilis .

RESUMO

The morphological study was done to see the number and location of parathyroid glands in relation to thyroid gland of Bangladeshi people to increase the knowledge regarding variational anatomy in our population. Sixty post mortem tissue block containing thyroid and parathyroids along with surrounding structures were collected from 48 male and 12 female cadavers of different age groups and fixed in 10% formol saline solution. Gross and fine dissections were carried out to study the topographic relationship and number of parathyroid glands in relation to thyroid gland. In the present study, findings were compared with the findings of Western and Bangladeshi researchers. In the present study, the so-called typical number of parathyroid glands that is 2 pairs per person (in relation to thyroid gland) was externally visible only in fifty percent (50%) of cases. According to this study, middle third of posterior border of thyroid gland lodged most of the glands (60-65%).

RESUMO

A cross sectional study was under taken to evaluate the prevalence of gallstone in fertile women who are taking oral contraceptives. The aim of study was to determine any significant association between oral contractive use and Cholelithiasis. Total number of patient was 340. A standard written questioner, which is dully filled by concerned doctor and examination done. History of use of oral contraceptive pills, duration of use and time of taking oral contraceptives drugs whether before, in between pregnancy or after family completion is recorded. Total number of patient was 340 of them 186 patient taken contraceptives and 154 patients without contraceptives. Incidence of gallstone shows that with contraceptives the 21-30 years age group 72(39.13%) without contraceptives 22(14.28%), in 31-40 years age group with contraceptives 74 (40%), without contraceptives 28(18.8%) where as in 41-50 years age group with contraceptives 37(20.10%) and without contraceptives 44(28.57%), 51 years and above age group with contraceptives is 01(0.54%) and without contraceptives is 60(38.96%). Significantly higher incidence of gallstones found in younger patient taking oral contraceptives than without contraceptives, but in older age group incidence is more in-patients without contraceptives than with contraceptives. Oral contraceptives increase the incidence of gallstones disease in younger women especially in early part of their use of oral contraceptives.

RESUMO

To study the histomorphological features of thyroid gland of Bangladeshi people in different age groups, thirty postmortem thyroid glands were collected and fixed in Bouin's fluid. For histological examination specimens were processed and stained following standard procedure and studied under low and high magnifications. Diameter of thyroid follicle and number of follicles per square millimeter were measured. Values were noted in a tabulated form and analyzed by SPSS program and findings were compared with the other studies of Western and Bangladeshi researchers and of standard textbooks. In this study it was observed that diameter of follicles were widely variable. The highest mean diameter of the follicles was found in 19 to 45 years age group and thyroids of this age group had fewer follicles per unit area of thyroid section than the two other groups. This difference was statistically significant with above 45 years age group (p=.001) and upto 18 years age group (p=.01) of the study. It was observed that all these findings of this geographical area were conformed to the findings of the other studies.

RESUMO

The study was done to see the relationship of recurrent laryngeal nerves with corresponding inferior thyroid artery with the aim to increase the knowledge regarding variational anatomy in our population. Sixty samples were collected as block dissection of thyroid gland along with the surrounding structures containing the supplying vessels and adjacent nerves from 48 male and 12 female cadavers of different age groups and fixed in 10% formol-saline solution. Fine dissections were carried out to study the toporgaphic relationship of recurrent laryngeal nerves with corresponding inferior thyroid artery. The findings were compared between different age groups and also with the findings of western researchers. In this study, in majority of the cases the recurrent laryngeal nerves were found in their usual location that is posterior to the terminal branches of inferior thyroid artery on the left side and anterior to that artery on the right side. It was important to note that, on both sides recurrent laryngeal nerves were also frequently found to pass in between the terminal branches of inferior thyroid artery.

RESUMO

Hyper reactive malarial splenomegaly (HMS) is a relatively rare chronic complication of malaria. Previous name of the disease was Tropical splenomegaly syndrome (TSS). It is seen in endemic zone of malaria. In Bangladesh it is very rare. It is more prevalent in Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand etc. It is due to abnormal immune response to malaria. Recently we got a typical case of HMS in our pediatric department of Community Based Medical College Hospital (CBMCH) Mymensingh. The patient, a seven years old boy came from Haluaghat, Mymensingh, which is a hyper endemic zone of malaria. The boy had history of repeated attack of malaria with huge chronic splenomegaly for five years. Antibody to malaria was positive & titer was markedly raised. Other causes of massive splenomegaly namely chronic Kala azar, Typhoid, congenital hemolytic anemia, Leukaemia, Lymphoma etc were excluded by laboratory examination. The boy was discharged with malaria prophylaxis for a long time & advised to come to our unit every month for further follow up.

RESUMO

Penetrating injury in the neck is not an uncommon condition, but a perforating foreign body like bamboo in the neck is uncommon. A 36 years old young man was admitted in Otolaryngology and Head Neck surgery department, Mymensingh Medical College hospital, with a history of accidental perforating injury in the neck with a bamboo, while driving a vehicle (tempo). Clinical examination revealed a bamboo measuring 4.6 X 0.09 ft. perforated in his neck from left to right. Surprisingly great vessels and air way spared. Due to difficult intubation, elective tracheostomy was done. Neck was explored and foreign body removed under general anesthesia. Haemostasis ensured and wound closed in layers after putting drain tubes. Recovery was uneventful and was discharged after three weeks.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to find out the pattern of extracranial complications of CSOM cases who attended to the department of ENTD, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital during the period from July'1999 to June' 2001. Different types of extracranial complications of CSOM were presented here. A total of 100 cases, diagnosed clinically and radiologically were included in the study of which 66 were male and 34 were female giving a male to female ratio of 1.94 : 1 (p < 0.05). Majority cases (53) were in the age group of 11- 20 years followed by the age group of below 10 years where there were 30 cases. Majority (64) cases came from low socio-economic class. The number of different types of extracranial complications of CSOM were as follows: mastoid abscess 57, discharging sinuses 28, purulent labyrinthitis 07, Bezold's abscess 04, fascial nerve paralysis 03 and zygomatic abscess 01. In all cases of CSOM Cholesteatoma were detected. In 14 cases, Cholesteatoma were associated with granulation tissue/polyp. Modified radical mastoidectomy were performed in all cases. On analyzing the findings of the present study it was observed that mastoid abscess were the predominant extracranial complications of CSOM, affecting mostly the male population of 11 - 20 years age group coming from low socio-economic class.

RESUMO

In infants who have experienced perinatal injury or who have neurological symptoms, it is often difficult on the basis of history and clinical examination to come to a proper diagnosis. Cranial ultrasonography of the symptomatic neonates can often diagnose the underlying pathology. Cranial ultrasonography of 28 admitted neonates with neurological symptoms was done at Community Based Medical College Hospital (CBMCH), Mymensingh. In 11 cases (39%) there were positive findings in ultrasonography. Of them, 7 (25%) were Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and 4 (14%) had dilated ventricles. No abnormal ultrasonography findings were noted in the remaining neonates. Before closure of the fontanelles, Ultrasonography can help as a cheaper, easier and acceptable method to diagnose some neurologic problems in children.
